Not only is the amount of fluid consumed and important consideration, but the type is equally important. Many individuals who have bladder control problems limit their fluid intake in an effort to control the urine accumulation in the bladder. Increasing or decreasing fluid intake may have a negative affect on the bladder. Too much fluid may cause the bladder to fill to quickly. Drinking too little fluid may make the urine too concentrated and may increase irritable voiding symptoms.

An easy way to determine if fluid intake is normal may be to monitor the color. Normal urine color should be pale yellow. If the color is darker than pale yellow, the individual may need more fluids. If the urine is clear the individual may be taking in too much fluid. Many people consume an increased amount of fruits and vegetables. These types of foods contain large amounts of water.


Most people are unaware of foods or fluids that are bladder irritants. Some of the bladder irritants are:

  • Any product with caffeine (some decaffeinated products contain some caffeine)
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Cocoa and Chocolate
  • Cola Drinks
  • Mountain Dew (and other Carbonated Beverages)
  • Tomatoes (or any product with tomatoes)
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Spicy Foods
  • Citrus Fruit Juices, e.g. orange & grapefruit juices (clear juices, such as apple and cranberry are okay)
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Milk (for those lactose intolerant)
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Over-the-counter Stimulants (NoDoz or other similar medications)
