Dr. Mary Mahern, M.D.

Biography

Dr. Mary Mahern is board certified in Family Practice. She was born and raised in Indianapolis and attended Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Family Practice at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. She has practiced in Bloomington for over ten years.

She brings her experience as a mother of three, and a former nurse to her approach as a physician. A strong advocate of preventive health care, she promotes a healthy lifestyle and regular checkups to assess overall health. "After about age thirty five I feel most people can benefit from an annual health assessment", she says. "With our busy modern lifestyle I think its important to take the time once a year to look at our health and our lifestyle and see if we are where we want to be." http://familydoctor.org/x4959.xml

Dr. Mahern believes that each individual must take responsibility for their own heath and involves her patients in medical decision making. While she follows standard "western medicine" recommendation, the best course of action to deal with a health issue is not always clear. She uses her knowledge base and communication skills to guide her patients through the sometimes complex decision making process.

She says "Particularly in cases of chronic disease states, such as diabetes and hypertension, having an understanding of the disease process, the risks and benefits of the various treatment options is essential in getting the patient to 'buy into ' the long term treatment that is necessary." Compliance with medications, testing and lifestyle recommendations is essential for good health and communication between patient and physician is key. She feels fortunate to practice in a city that has so many excellent specialists to help when needed in the care of her patients. As one of the very few independent practitioners in Bloomington she is not affiliated with any one group of physicians but utilizes the consulting services of a wide range of specialists in Bloomington and Indianapolis.

Her practice is limited to outpatient care only. When her patients need to be hospitalized she utilizes the services of a hospital specialist at Bloomington Hospital. Communication about the hospital admission is essential in the follow up care provided by Dr. Mahern.

She finds practicing medicine in the United States of America in the early 21st century very frustrating at times. She is a proponent of national health care.

Dr. Mahern encourages all Americans to become informed about the critical issues of access to health care in our country and to contact your elected officials about your concerns.
